I didn't, so please let me know if you have seen any that I have missed.  I'm stumped.  Eight gorgeous gardens, countless hours of energy and preparation by the gardeners and tour organizers, more than a thousand tour attendees and not a word in the paper or two seconds on the local news after the event. While I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, the gardens, the knowledgeable docents, the stunning architecture and sharing a gorgeous day with more than 1,000 attendees, my joy was somewhat tarnished by the realization that came later that day.

I spent the second half of my Saturday on one of my favorite assignments as a Modesto Real Estate agent - I had the opportunity to spend time with clients moving across the country in order to introduce and orient them to their new location. Having taken a job with one of our area's largest employers, the couple has relocated from North Carolina excited for their latest professional opportunity but literally terrified to leave their gated temporary housing for fear of auto theft and assault based on the constant barrage of negative press for which our area has become known.  They were somewhat willing to consider finding a home in a gated community in Modesto but were fairly intent on finding a residence in the bay area based on the impression they had of Modesto.    

Every Rose Has It's Thorn

I always love spending the day showing my relocation clients around this city.  Before we even start to think about home shopping, I find it incredibly important (and enjoyable) to help them become familiar with the unique characteristics of each of our neighborhoods and share with them where to find everything from the best restaurants, medical services, shopping centers and entertainment.  On this particular day, however, I realized (again) that the reasons we choose to call this city home are all too often are overshadowed.  It's a symptom of the vacuum we live in where, for some reason, we have allowed only negativity to define us. It seems that all too often and in spite of so many of our neighbors valiant efforts, the extensive list of reasons we LOVE Modesto just don't hit the headlines. Yes, bad things happen in Modesto.  Yes, we have our obstacles, tragedies and notorious "bad guys", but keep in mind, we are a city sprawling over 37 square miles with more than 200,000 people with so many more great things going on, in reality, than bad. We just don't seem to speak as loudly about them.  

Sweet Success

After more than 3 hours touring Modesto together, we ended our discovery at one of the Garden Tour destinations.  We meandered through the beautiful garden in the shaded, evening light greeted by the friendly docents and chatted with the home owner (my mother-in-law, to be fair).  When we got back in the car to head back home to the security of their gated apartment complex, they turned to me and apologized.  I had been objective on the tour, not trying to talk them in to loving Modesto, but just showed them around hoping that the city would speak for itself.  I certainly didn't need an apology, but was definitely delighted to hear their change of heart.  On the ride home I couldn't help but smile as they anxiously chatted about seeing a show at the Gallo Center for the Arts, joining the Garden Club and finding out more about our local service organizations, dinner at Dewz or Bacchus, attending Concert in the Park and most importantly, assured me that Modesto would be their new home town.

SPOOKTACULAR FILM FESTIVAL

They say what's old becomes new again - but in the case of zombies, they never seem to go out of style, or maybe it's just that they refuse to stay undead. Now see the consummate zombie film - the granddaddy of the genre -- along with trailers from classic horror films, mostly from the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Spooktacular Film Festival, constructed like the greatest midnight spook show ever, is a hilarious and oddly disturbing mix, including a Technicolor cartoon called The Cobweb Hotel from 1936 and, the main attraction, a full-length, uncut print of George Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968), the gross-out classic that literally changed the face of screen terror. A lot of the laughs in Spooktacular come from the trailers.

While I certainly would not consider myself a "techie", I do appreciate new tools that increase effectiveness..especially when they are free. I have been patiently awaiting the adoption of the QR code in Modesto and the Central Valley area for a couple of years now and just couldn't wait any longer to put it to work.  I have been very excited to notice posters on display in downtown Modesto featuring the codes and they seem to be popping up more frequently in advertisements and magazines of all sorts.  This technology is easy, it's free and even if one person knows what the heck that crazy square thing is on my latest listing's postcard or sign rider, than it was worth sharing.  
So what is a QR code?  It stands for "Quick Response" code and, simply put, it's that little square, black and white image that, when scanned by a QR code reader, will provide you with additional information.  According to the Wikipedia article, it was created by Toyota and is now being used by marketers in every industry imaginable to move views from the world of print to additional information or an online location.

This technology allows me to put the QR code (previously mentioned little square, black and white image) on a sign rider in front of my listings so that when someone drives by, they can scan the code and, instantly, a document with detailed information about the property will pop up on their smart phone or iPad.  I also include the QR code on my flyers and postcards so that I can provide additional information and connect with the recipients online.  All the person needs is a QR reader which can be downloaded on your smart phone for free.  It's a free and simple way to provide additional information and to move people from print to online interaction.

It's fun to find out what these QR codes have in store.  Next time you see one, be sure to take a quick second to scan the code.  You just might be surprised.

 ]]> Modesto Image: More Than Soil, More than Sky http://www.sarahfields.com/Blog.php/modesto-image-more-than-soil-more-than-sky Sat, 22 Oct 2011 08:49:46 -0700 Sarah Fields Modesto Image http://www.sarahfields.com/Blog.php/modesto-image-more-than-soil-more-than-sky There has been extensive discussion (and grumbling) lately about the image of Modesto after a team from the local service organization, CommonWealth Modesto, proposed a new slogan and campaign to equip our community with a positive perspective on our city.  Long, painful story short, the plan was quickly overlooked while the slogan was met with intense objection and all things came to a (temporary) hault.  We have yet to hear from any objectors with a new plan and, for today, sit idle no further along than we were 2 years ago.  It is my hope that the team that has sacrificed so many hours to tackle this issue muster up their second wind and partner with the passionate responders that surly intend to contribute their time for the forward motion of this project. We shall see.

But what if you just want to do something small to support the movement towards a more positive image of Modesto? Say, something that takes less than 5 minutes and $15 and can be done right from where you are right now?  Put Siri to the test and ask for "More Thank Soil, More Than Sky" on Amazon. Or for those of us old-fashioned, Siri-less individuals, put your fingers to work and search online...but either way, BUY the book.

Worked up a quick virtual tour with my iPhone. This thing does it ALL...Everything except hold a decent cell phone signal, that is.

I posted the video to the usual online locations and received some great feedback, comments and calls with interest and exclamation over the opportunity.  It is hard to believe that homes are available for under $50,000, especially with a pool, a golf course view and such a nice, clean, quiet area.
